Motivation

In our last class discussion the topic of motivation was brought up. The general consensus seemed to be that there is a magical property in expertise which comes down to motivation—both external and internal. This course has been externally motivating me to learn to write Chinese, but at the same time, I picked writing Chinese as the topic because I already was internally motivated to learn it.

The internal motivation tends to wear off pretty quickly when I get frustrated with a particular character or stroke. But after a little bit of not practicing I sometimes notice a Chinese character—and I realize that I can break it down into its stroke components most of the time. It’s so cool to be able to look at them now and actually see a little bit of how they were composed. I still have a long way to go, but that helps my internal motivation.
