WordPress.org Bandwidth Costs Too High?

Apparently WordPress.org’s bandwidth costs were too high, causing them to spam the heck out of Google.

Maybe if WordPress 1.5 installations didn’t have that really annoying “WordPress Development Blog” in the admin dashboard that every single WordPress user sees every single time they admin their site, the bandwidth costs wouldn’t be so high!

  1. Maybe if we, the users, were a little quicker to pay for the services we use while Matt scrambled to cover the costs–nobody predicted the growth rate WP has seen–he wouldn’t have been faced with that tough decision. I don’t defend his actions, but I am donating three figures today.

  2. Yeah, pretty crazy story. Not handled very well at all. Ah well, I’ll still probably keep using WP for awhile.

  3. I’m still going to use WordPress, but it’s still quite silly that they complain about bandwidth costs when they’re forcing every single WordPress user to load an RSS feed off of their site every time a user goes to admin. If you want to avoid high bandwidth costs, you shouldn’t do stupid things like that.
