Daily Dose of NPR

I’ve always wanted to listen to more NPR. Every now and then I’d get a few doses and like it, but I don’t generally listen to the radio (I don’t even own a car). I don’t particularly like streaming, mostly because I like to be able to pause and not catch a show right in the middle.

Now that podcasting is built into iTunes (and I can now have a toplevel “Podcasting” directory on my iPod!), I’m subscribed to The Road Less Traveled, Le Show, and On The Media. I’m hoping there will soon be a podcast for Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me.

I’ll note that I really like the podcasting interface Apple added to iTunes. I love how the little “i” logo is a person, an antenna, and an “i” all at once. I like the automatic downloading and greyed-out additional episodes. I like how they took the Audiobook feature of “save my current location” and used that with podcasts—so I can listen to part of a show on my iPod, then sync it, and continue from my laptop. And, of course, I like having a toplevel “Podcasts” directory on my iPod right below “Music”.

I’m looking forward to getting into the whole NPR thing! Of course, I’ll check out other podcasts, but for the time being, I think NPR is the killer feature for me.

  1. hrm, i think the podcast icon looks a bit ugly when it’s real small…doesn’t feel like anything to me =p

  2. Yeah, you’re probably right. The tiny version isn’t very good.

  3. I can’t wait to get back to my normal routine and try this out. I didn’t enjoy using Podcasts because the old ones were never deleted and it was hard to get to the episodes (the easiest way seemed to be by using the Genre of Podcasts).

Too bad This American Life won’t give us free broadcasts. They seem to be making some money from Audible.

Did I tell you I got to be an audience member at Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me in Dallas? Love that show!

  4. Nice! I’d love to be able to see Wait Wait.

What do you mean about the “hard to get to the episodes” part? I have a Podcasts menu right in my toplevel iPod menu, which I select, then select the show, then select the episode. That was the reason for the firmware update when Podcasts were announced. :)

  5. No, no, I mean before Podcasts was integrated.

  6. Ah, well, that makes sense :)
