One of my former design teachers (he was a grad student, taught the Visual Interface Design course I took) has finally put into words the reasons that personas are often bad ideas.

As he says, personas can work wonders when done well, but if you aren’t going to bother to do any sort of user research beforehand and just make them up out of thin air, they can do more harm than good.
