Google Talk will do server-to-server
One of the Google Talk developers posted to the Jabber developer mailing list. An excerpt:
I’d like to let everybody know that Google will support open server-to-server federation, This will not happen immediately. We are still writing the code for server-to-server and we will test server-to-server with a few partners before opening it up.

He goes on to say that in response to complaints like mine, the Google Talk developer page has been updated with the following:
We plan to support open server-to-server federation. We do believe, however, that it is important to have the safeguards in place to ensure that we maintain a safe and reliable service that protects user privacy and blocks spam and other abuses.
Sounds quite reasonable. I look forward to the day when Google Talk users can IM my regular Jabber account!
